The Apprentice School Welcomes Over 100 Guests for Hands-On Career Exploration

Newport News Shipbuilding’s Apprentice School rolled out the red carpet for more than 100 high school students and their families during its signature FORWARD event on Saturday, April 5.

Designed to introduce prospective students to the school’s unique blend of hands-on training and academic excellence, the event offered an interactive glimpse into life as an apprentice – complete with a tour of the school and candid conversations with those who know it best, simulation labs, and giveaways.

A team of volunteers – composed of current apprentices, faculty and staff – greeted guests as they arrived. Attendees explored the school’s virtual simulation lab, where students tested their skills in immersive environments that replicate real-world shipbuilding trades.

Parents and guardians gathered for an engaging Q&A information session, where school representatives answered questions about admissions, program pathways and the unparalleled career opportunities available to graduates. A guided tour of The Apprentice School offered families a firsthand look at the spaces where apprentices learn, grow and train to become future leaders in the industry.

“Our FORWARD events are an essential part of helping prospective students envision their future here,” said Tarah Leake, a program administrator for The Apprentice School. “It’s not just about seeing the facilities – it’s about meeting the people who bring this place to life.”

The successful April event has sparked excitement for the next FORWARD session, which will take place Oct. 4. Registration for that event will open in early fall.

Shipbuilders interested in volunteering for upcoming FORWARD events should email Tarah Leake.
