Forty years ago this month, Newport News Shipbuilding conducted the first-ever modular construction island superlift for the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). This photo shows the island being lifted onto the flight deck after it was built separately, which is a significant time-saver. Islands for earlier aircraft carriers were built on the flight deck.
