Newport News Shipbuilding is unveiling the latest generation of Dorothy Artificial Intelligence Copilots, revolutionizing shipbuilding operations by simplifying workflows, increasing productivity and enhancing safety.

These innovative solutions empower shipbuilders to quickly access information within SharePoint and other data repositories. All Dorothy AI Copilot solutions are on premise, allowing users to feel safe when using the copilots because searches will not go beyond the NNS network.

No classified information can be used in any of the copilots.

“A copilot is the person who sits next to you and helps you achieve your mission. We want Dorothy to be a part of your work product – something that stands right next to you to help you do what you’re responsible for,” Jason Sutton, vice president and chief information officer, said.

 

Several new AI copilots are being added to Dorothy: Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), Command Media and Content Generation.

The Dorothy EH&S Copilot provides instant answers to questions related to the Health and Safety Manual and active job safety analyses, such as “What are the PPE requirements for operating a forklift?” By leveraging the manual, the copilot reduces safety risks.

Similarly, the Dorothy AI Copilot for Command Media (currently in beta testing) offers the same functionality for the entire NNS Command Media repository. The copilot’s responses include links to the source documents, which allows shipbuilders to quickly verify the accuracy and relevance of the answers.

Finally, the content generation copilot enables shipbuilders to perform a range of tasks typically associated with generative AI, such as drafting emails, summarizing content and answering general knowledge questions across various topics – similar to ChatGPT. This copilot features an intuitive interface for uploading files, allowing users to skip copying and pasting content into a chat window. With this feature, shipbuilders can upload detailed documents and break them down into quick summaries, draft emails based on multiple documents, search for information in unfamiliar documents and more.

By integrating their knowledge base with AI-driven features, Dorothy AI Copilots are transforming NNS and the shipbuilding industry by streamlining operations and boosting productivity.

“Our intent is that this helps accelerate the employee,” Sutton said. “Dorothy will not replace jobs, but it is important that we enhance and we embrace these opportunities of what it means to make us better at the jobs that we have.”
