This year’s Newport News Shipbuilding 5K is set for September. Behind every successful race are the dedicated volunteers who work to create a safe and memorable experience for participants. These volunteers help by setting up registration tables, directing and helping participants, handing out water and cheering runners on at the finish line.

Many volunteers are fellow shipbuilders who give their time to not only support their fellow shipbuilders, but promote health and wellness. One of those volunteers is Jimmy McDonald (E49), an engineering planning analyst. McDonald, a veteran volunteer, has helped at more than half a dozen NNS 5Ks.

“I like volunteering because not only are you interacting with people and helping them through the course, you’re getting your steps in too,” McDonald said.

McDonald has also participated in other NNS-sponsored events like the Heart Walk and Relay For Life. He encourages others to get involved and register for the upcoming NNS 5K.

“It’s a great thing the company does, and it’s for a good cause. You can create teams and get your exercise in for the day. It’s a lot of fun,” said McDonald.

The race will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at Victory Landing Park in downtown Newport News. Registration includes a T-shirt and is $20 for adults and teens, and $15 for children 12 and under. Visit MyQuadMed.com/hii-nns/5k for more information and to register.
