Newport News shipbuilders recently installed the portside rudder and rudder stock on USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) as part of the aircraft carrier’s extensive refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH). The rudder, which weighs 49 tons, was lowered into the dry dock and positioned into place. The approximately 27-foot-long rudder stock, which weighs 20 tons, was then lowered into and through several layers of the aircraft carrier to hold the rudder in place.
