Watch Shipbuilders Install Anchor on USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74)

Watch a time-lapse video featuring the anchor installation on the starboard side of USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) during the aircraft carrier’s refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipbuilding.

This weeklong evolution occurred in July and was a joint effort between NNS and the U.S. Navy. The anchor chain consists of 12 shots of chain, containing 57 links per shot – each shot of chain weighs over 20,000 pounds. The combined weight of all the shots and additional material installed for one fully intact anchor chain is nearly 258,000 pounds, which does not include the ship’s anchor, which weighs just over 66,000 pounds.
