“I applied for both the Navy and the Marine Corps, but it was taking a long time and I got into the shipyard first. When the Navy finally called, I turned it down because I was happy. I remember getting asked to mirror weld for submarine work. It was intimidating but I took it seriously and made mock-ups that would force me to work with the mirror. Welding, like anything, takes practice to master. You could be upside down. It could be with a mirror. It may take years to truly master, but I love building and it’s a great job.”
