What Does “Always On” Mean to You?
Published September 10, 2025
As Newport News shipbuilders, we are “Always On.” Whether pulling cable, collaborating with a fellow shipbuilder or checking out at the grocery store, how each of us behaves and interacts with others shapes our company’s reputation and culture.
Demand for our ships has never been greater, and an “Always On” mindset is key to establishing a sense of urgency to meet our commitments and carry out our mission to build quality ships for the U.S. Navy. You may have noticed “Always On” banners at the gates and screen savers displaying “Always On” messaging across computer screens.
“Always On pays tribute to our Always Good Ships legacy and marks a turning point – an opportunity to reset, refocus and re-energize our commitment to excellence,” said LaMar Smith (O29), NNS’ graphic artist who created the concept. “As we work to turn our performance around, this campaign reflects how each of us plays a critical role in shaping a stronger future. Together, we are Always On.”
Broad interpretation is the goal of the campaign. For some shipbuilders, “Always On” may point to the fact that NNS is a 24/7 operation and shipbuilders work around the clock to accomplish our mission, while others may relate it to always staying true to our moral compass – inside and outside of work.
So – inquiring minds want to know: what inspires you to be Always On at work? Crew talks this week will include discussion about how shipbuilders interpret “Always On.”
